How to Prepare for your Mini Session

Mini Sessions are a great way to get updated family photos every year without breaking the bank and having to keep the kids happy for a full 1 hour session. After you’ve booked your mini session, you may be wondering about the best ways to get the most out of those 15 minutes. So I’ve put together some tips on how to prepare for your mini session:

Arrive Early

Mini sessions are short so try to arrive early to your session. Arriving about 10 minutes early gives you plenty of time to get everyone out of the car, and to the photo shoot area. Mini sessions are scheduled back to back so if you arrive late, you may lose session time and impact the number of images you receive.

There is street parking in front of my studio building on Dundas Street as well as Brock Street. There is also a couple parking lots located on Byron Street North and Byron Street South. Use the following map with the parking locations circled in yellow.

What Should We Wear?
*Try to plan your outfits well in advance*

When picking out an outfit, I suggest to pick three to four colours for the family, with one being an “accent” colour. Choose coordinating colours (but not matchy, matchy). Some photographers say to stay away from patterns, but I just love patterns and stripes and bright colours! With that being said, do not dress everyone in stripes or patterns. I think they can work well if you use the pattern as an “accent” with other people wearing something more neutral. Clothing with texture, such as cable-knit sweaters, softly-textured cardigans, and big poofy dresses photograph beautifully.

Preparing Your Child
If you know that your kids aren’t great in front of the camera or with meeting new people, bring along a few tricks that may help. This could be a toy that I can hold to get their attention, or a treat to encourage them to smile. You know your kids better than I do, so it’s always nice to come prepared. The only downside to mini sessions is that we just jump in with no warm up time.

Let the kids know you are doing a photo shoot a few days before so it is not a surprise for them. A great way to get them excited about the session is to practice some poses together. Remember this day is about you and your family (well mostly your kids) so try not to stress. Children can sense stress and it will show in the photos. A little bit of goofiness and giggling can actually make some of the best photos. Relax, be happy and have fun!

P.S ... Don't surprise dad at the last minute! ;)

I like casual shots that feel natural, which in my opinion are usually the most beautiful. I can direct as needed, but also feel free to just be in the moment with your family.

I am looking forward to working with you!
